Pediatric Nurse Practitioner

Career Description

Our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner will practice independently and collaboratively with David Epstein MD, a highly regarded, board-certified pediatrician with over 30 years of experience practicing in Delaware.  As part of our patient care team, each practitioner provides independent ongoing well-child and sick care for the practice’s patients.  Career development is encouraged by providing time and resources for continuing education.  Dr. Epstein is available at all times to provide support and consultation.

Job Requirements

We seek a PNP who will practice the highest quality of care within her scope of practice.  Careful histories, physical exams and age-appropriate screening will be performed.  Expert and cautious judgment will be used to form diagnoses and patient plans.  Appropriate ordering and interpretation of laboratory tests and x-rays will be performed.  Patient advice and education will be provided.  Care will be coordinated with specialist consultations and mental health practitioners.

The practitioner is expected to maintain a full-time patient schedule.  Some evening and weekend patient hours are a responsibility of the position.  The pace of the schedule is commensurate with the abilities and comfort of the practitioner; we avoid overbooking, although occasional patient emergencies arise.

Effective verbal and written communication skills will be used to communicate with our patients, families and staff.  Every patient visit must be documented appropriately and completely, in a timely fashion, to satisfy patient care needs and insurance requirements.  Each of our staff functions as a valued member of our team: treating each other with respect, maintaining a “family” atmosphere, sharing administrative duties, and contributing substantially to the office environment and the care of our patients.

After-hours triage call is shared between the nurse practitioner and physician.  We cover only patients in our own practice.  (In general, our patients are respectful and gracious about contacting us after hours, and after-hours triage call is not burdensome.)  Dr. Epstein is available at all times to provide support and consultation.

Practitioners are expected to comply with all applicable laws and regulations, including HIPAA compliance, OSHA regulations, and licensing requirements.  Appropriate certification must be maintained.  All staff must comply with the regulations described in our Employee Handbook.

On occasion, students and trainees may rotate through our office; practitioners will have an opportunity to participate in their training and education.

All our staff members are expected to work flexibly and assist our office in times of crisis or weather emergency.

Necessary Skills

Appropriate skill and experience in all aspects of the provision of well child care and sick care is expected.  Effective communication, written and verbal, is required.  Each member of our staff is trained to be facile with our electronic health record (Allscripts®).

Company Benefits

We provide a competitive compensation package.  Benefits include:

  • health insurance, if needed
  • 401(k) plan
  • professional liability insurance
  • assistance with credentialing and licensing, including reimbursement of fees
  • annual continuing education allowance

We are fortunate to have a beautiful, spacious office in a new medical building. Our support staff is passionate and committed. Complete laboratory and X-ray services are available within the building.  Dr. Epstein is on staff at Christiana Medical Center, with more than 7,000 deliveries a year. Dr. Epstein is also on staff at duPont Children's Hospital in Wilmington, and we have an excellent relationship with the hospital's specialty services.

Delaware Modern Pediatrics is located in a vibrant suburban area south of Wilmington, Delaware. The city has an active arts and performance scene. A new YMCA down the street from our office has a beautiful facility and many programs. The University of Delaware and the historic jewels of the Brandywine Valley are a short distance; and downtown Philadelphia and Baltimore are each less than an hour's drive.
