California eliminates religious exemption for vaccines

Date: July 1, 2015

Religious and personal "exemptions" to opt out of childhood vaccinations will be completely eliminated in California under a new law. It is hoped that this will help prevent outbreaks of contagious illnesses, such as the recent Measles outbreak at Disneyland.

The requirement for routine immunization will not apply to children who are home schooled, or unvaccinated children who are already enrolled in public school.

California has had one of the lowest rates of childhood immunization in the nation, due to parents' ability to claim religious or personal opposition to vaccinations.  The new law allows only for medical exemptions, certified by a licensed practitioner.

The requirement for routine immunization in order to enroll in school or daycare is legislated on a state by state basis.  The new state law moves California from one of the most permissive states to the most rigid.
